Diwali is five days: Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdashi, Lakshmi Puja on Amavasya, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj. The main night falls on the new moon of Kartika, the darkest night of the year — which is the point of the lamps. Lakshmi Puja has a specific muhurat, usually during Pradosh Kaal with sthir lagna, and it shifts by city because it depends on local sunset.
