Ganesh Chaturthi begins on the fourth day of the waxing moon in Bhadrapada. The installation should be done during the madhyahna period, when Ganesha is held to have been born. Households choose a duration — one and a half, three, five, seven or ten days — and the festival closes with visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi.
Rituals
- Install the murti during madhyahna on the first day
- Offer modak and durva grass daily
- Perform aarti morning and evening for the chosen duration
- Immerse on the final day with visarjan
- Avoid viewing the moon on Chaturthi night, by tradition
