Significance

Maha Shivaratri falls on the fourteenth night of the waning moon in Phalguna, the darkest night of that lunar month. Unlike most festivals it is observed at night rather than by day, and the practice is inward: fasting, stillness, and repetition of the Panchakshara mantra rather than feasting. Devotees keep vigil through four prahars, each with its own abhishekam.

Rituals

  • Fast through the day — many keep a nirjala (waterless) fast
  • Offer abhishekam with water, milk, honey and bilva leaves
  • Chant Om Namah Shivaya through the night
  • Keep vigil across all four prahars where possible
  • Break the fast the next morning after sunrise
