This is the first day of Chaitra, the start of the lunar year in the Deccan calendars. It is traditionally the day for hearing the Panchanga Sravanam — the year ahead read out from the almanac — which makes it the single most astrologically-oriented festival in the calendar. Ugadi pachadi, mixing six tastes, is eaten as a statement that the coming year will hold all of them.
Rituals
- Oil bath before sunrise and fresh clothes
- Hoist the Gudi (Maharashtra) or decorate the doorway with mango leaves
- Eat Ugadi pachadi — six tastes in one preparation
- Attend or read the Panchanga Sravanam for the year ahead
